For those anhedonic persons who pass through the gateway, we have the classic addict problem for society. A battery of medical, pharmaceutical, and psychological remedies are at hand, however unsuccessful. But for the amotivational person, the problem is not recognized or acknowledged. They are simply the “slackers.” They cause minor current disruption simply because they are passive. But what are the long-term ramifications in a society obsessed with identity? Will the slackers become still another identity group manipulated for political and “social justice” purposes? It is hard to imagine a more vulnerable group.
That raises the question that has been recurrent in this assessment of pot legalization: Why has it become desirable to provide, indeed promote, use of marijuana if it has potential problems with amotivation. One answer, however insidious, is that politicians see pacifism as an answer for the increasing violence in street protests leading to dissatisfaction with the ballot process. Identity groups reject voting as a solution to the problems of our society. They seek to overthrow capitalism for socialism, to flatten the range of wealth, to demand non-controlled borders, to protect absolutist pro-choice, to demean the process of judicial appointment, to regard sexual dysphoria as natural, to dismiss marriage and fidelity as out of fashion, and to disdain centuries of religious practice. Meanwhile alt-right gun possession, commitment to an irrational president, anti-environmentalism, contempt for higher education, and idolatry of free markets, were getting out of hand and jeopardizing the political stability of the country. There is nothing that frightens politicians more than that the loss of their grip on the masses may deprive them of their privileged position of power in the country.
Suppose that the government, in an unusual correct view of the far-off future, anticipated even worse times – political upheaval. Is it possible that some macabre Harvard professor called upon to lead the nation out of the declining respect for law and order is given license to slowly convince the States and eventually the Federal government that the hooligans could be pacified by the simple measure of providing an arresting drug that conduced amotivational conduct? No, not a conspiracy theory, I leave those to Oliver Stone and Infowars. Indeed, it need not be a program that must be carried by the diabolical deep state. It may simply be cold calculation to save the republic.
Marijuana may be the answer. According to its adherents, it is medically harmless, does not lead to more dangerous drugs and renders the hyper adolescents more mellow. It is a utopian solution to the pains of democratic capitalism. It is social justice on a global scale; all are equal except of course those Alpha + individuals who determine what is equal. It subverts the desire for choosing elected leaders and rids the world of alleged freedom and its discontent. It trashes religion as juvenile and mythological. Huxley explains through the medical officer chiding the Shakespeare quoting maverick:
“Because our world is not the same as Othello’s world. You can’t make flivvers without steel – and you can’t make tragedies without want, and they never want what they can’t get. They’re well off; they’re safe; they’re never ill; they’re not afraid of death; they’re blissfully ignorant of passion and old age; they’re plagued with no mothers or fathers; they’ve got no wives, or children, or lovers to feel strongly about; they’re so conditioned that they practically can’t help behaving as they ought to behave. And if anything should go wrong, there’s soma. Which you go and chuck out of the window in the name of liberty, Mr. Savage. Liberty!” He laughed. “Expecting Deltas to know what liberty is! And now expecting them to understand Othello! My good boy!”
A brave new world cannot be created from an addicted or dependent society. It requires a drug that permits the dehumanized autobots to carry out the functional necessities of a society. They must be passive, untouched by events, anaesthetized to emotion, and when unhappy find pleasure in a harmless drug:
“And if ever, by some unlucky chance, anything unpleasant should somehow happen, why, there’s always soma to give you a holiday from the facts. And there’s always soma to calm your anger, to reconcile you to your enemies, to make you patient and long-suffering. In the past you could only accomplish these things by making a great effort and after years of hard moral training. Now, you swallow two or three half-gramme tablets, and there you are. Anybody can be virtuous now. You can carry at least half your morality about in a bottle. Christianity without tears-that’s what soma is.”
Thus, marijuana may have its purpose. Scarcely that advocated by the business interests. Nor the immediate buy-the-vote venal politicians. A usage that has a long term effect that is more radical than any of the current defects of legalization. It will reorganize society, separating the A+ members from the proletariat. It will place the control of society in a class of unequals. It will concentrate power like the world has never known. And yet there will be no dissent, or dissatisfaction – or freedom and dignity. There will be the bliss of marijuana, an invisible cloud that rests on and rejuvenates the weary minds of the deplorables. Not power, but peaceful contentment – to the people.
